
Omar Abdullah, born on 10 March 1970, is a politician, the scion of the Abdullah family, and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. He is the son of Farooq Abdullah and grandson of Sheikh Abdullah, who were also former Chief Ministers of the state.
Omar Abdullah began his political career in 1998, when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Srinagar. He was the youngest member of Parliament at the time. In 2001, he was appointed as the Minister of State for External Affairs in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. In 2002, he was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Beerwah constituency. He went on to become the youngest Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2009 at the age of 38.
During his tenure as Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah launched several initiatives to improve the socio-economic conditions of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He also focused on the development of infrastructure, tourism, and education sectors in the state. He was also instrumental in creating an environment of peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir, through his efforts to promote dialogue and reconciliation.
Omar Abdullah is known for his sharp political acumen and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He is a respected leader and has been widely appreciated for his contribution to the development of Jammu and Kashmir. In spite of his family’s political lineage, he has carved a niche for himself in the political arena based on his own merit and hard work.
However, Omar Abdullah’s term was marked by several challenges including the 2010 unrest and the 2014 floods. His government was accused of not handling the crisis effectively.
